Most ukulele classes in Goa follow a fixed curriculum — same chord progressions, same beginner songs, same exam path, regardless of who you are. We don’t work that way. At School of Music, every student starts from where they actually are. A 7-year-old picking up their very first instrument, a teenager who wants to strum along to their favourite pop songs, a working adult looking for something genuinely theirs after a long week — each gets a lesson built around them. Different age, different background, different goals, different lesson.
We don’t train students for grade exams. We train them to play. Rodden builds every class around what you actually want to express — the songs you love, the styles that move you, the techniques that get you there. Chord shapes, strumming patterns, fingerpicking, song accompaniment, solo melodies — all of it taught at your pace, in your direction. Because the point of learning ukulele isn’t to pass a test. It’s to make music quickly, and have fun doing it.
A concert ukulele is the best all-round starting size for most beginners. It's slightly larger than the traditional soprano — about 23 inches — with more space between the frets, which makes finger placement easier for adult hands. Soprano ukuleles work better for children and players with small hands. Both use the same standard G-C-E-A tuning, so lessons transfer between sizes.
Yes, significantly. Ukulele has only four strings instead of six, the nylon strings are gentle on fingertips with almost no callus pain, and many ukulele chords use just one or two fingers. Most beginners are playing complete songs within their first few lessons. It's one of the fastest instruments to get to enjoyable playing — which is exactly why it's such a popular starting point for both kids and adults.
Children as young as 7 can start ukulele comfortably. The small body fits naturally on a child's lap, the nylon strings don't hurt small fingers, and the simpler chord shapes mean a child can play their first song very quickly. It's one of the best first instruments for younger learners.
Yes. Many skills carry directly across — strumming patterns, rhythm, chord theory, reading chord charts, and hand coordination all transfer to guitar. Some ukulele players use it as a stepping stone to guitar, while many others stick with ukulele because they fall in love with the instrument itself. Either path works.
Far more than people expect. Ukulele works beautifully for pop, indie, folk, jazz, Hawaiian, fingerstyle instrumental music, Bollywood, worship, and singer-songwriter material. Modern players like Jake Shimabukuro have shown the instrument can handle classical pieces and complex solo arrangements too. Whatever you're drawn to, ukulele can probably get you there.
No. Most ukulele music is taught through chord charts and tablature, which are far simpler than standard notation. You can learn dozens of songs without reading sheet music. If you want to go deeper into music theory and notation, that's available through our theory classes, but it's never a prerequisite for playing.
Ukulele classes at School of Music are ₹4,000 per month for 8 sessions — four instrument lessons plus four theory sessions. Each session is 45 minutes long. Lessons are available in person at our studio in Calangute, or online for students across Goa and beyond. Trial classes are available before you commit.
It can absolutely be taken seriously. Plenty of adult students start ukulele as a casual hobby and grow into serious players performing fingerstyle arrangements, accompanying themselves singing, or playing in groups. It's a real instrument with real depth — how far you take it is entirely up to you.
