Music theory is the language that lets you communicate with other musicians, write your own music, understand why certain chord progressions sound the way they do, and learn new songs ten times faster. Most beginners are intimidated by symbols on a page, but theory is built on simple repeating patterns — once you understand the structure of one major scale, you understand all of them. With a good teacher, the foundations of theory click faster than people expect, and each new concept builds naturally on the last.

The fundamentals include notation, scales, intervals, chord construction, keys and key signatures, rhythm and time signatures, and basic harmony. As you progress, theory expands into chord progressions, modes, modulation, voice leading, and analysis of real pieces of music. Every concept is taught in a way that connects directly to playing — not as abstract study.

Yes, but it works better alongside one. Theory becomes real when you can hear and play what you're learning. Most of our theory students are already learning an instrument — guitar, keyboard, bass, or vocals — and theory accelerates their progress on whatever they play. If you're only doing theory, we'll still connect every concept to sound through demonstration.

The foundation — notation, scales, intervals, basic chords, time signatures, and key signatures — typically takes three to six months of consistent classes to genuinely absorb. After that, theory expands continuously throughout your musical life. The first six months gives you enough to read sheet music, understand most songs, and communicate with other musicians.

Music theory at School of Music can be taught in groups or one-on-one basis as is needed. The group format works because theory benefits from discussion, shared questions, and exposure to how other students think through concepts. It also keeps the cost significantly lower than individual sessions while maintaining the depth of instruction.

Yes, we do prepare students for graded music theory examinations when that aligns with their goals. However, our primary focus is practical understanding — helping students read music confidently, internalise rhythm and harmony, and apply theory directly to the instruments they play and the music they love. Should a student later choose to pursue an ABRSM or Trinity theory certification, we are happy to provide the guidance and preparation needed for success. We view examinations as valuable milestones rather than the ultimate objective, with the true goal being a deeper, more intuitive relationship with music.
